What is Chip & PIN?

Chip & PIN is the new, more secure way to pay with credit or debit cards in the UK.

Instead of customers using their signature to verify payments, they will be asked to enter a four-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) known only to them. Chip & PIN is the biggest change to the way we pay since decimalisation. It is part of a global programme to tackle the soaring levels of plastic card fraud.

Consumer Information

Although it is a clever system which will foil the fraudsters, Chip & PIN couldn't be easier to use. Instead of signing a paper receipt to verify a card payment, customers will be asked to enter a four-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN), just like you do now at a cash machine.

The majority of cardholders will now have a Chip & PIN card. If your customers have not yet received a Chip & PIN card, they don’t need to do anything. Chip & PIN cards will continue to be issued throughout 2005, most probably when cards reach their expiry dates. Your customers can continue to use non-chip and PIN cards in all outlets, and they will be asked to sign for goods, just as they have always have done.
